As a mother of almost 5, 5 and under, I don’t get much time to sit down and read. But there will always be something special about sitting with a physical book, turning pages, making notes, reading for the children. Here I recommend 12 Best Books To Read In 2024, or what is left of 2024, in our journey to grow as Christians, homemakers, wives and mothers.

Book lying in grass

1) THE BIBLE

Naturally, I need to place the most important one first. Reading the Bible everyday is still to this day one of my biggest battles. But also the most important battle. I know I am mostly fighting against myself and my self discipline. Still, it will always stay my biggest priority to read the Bible often with a heart to search for and desire to get to know my Creator, Protecter and Sustainer. You can find it here.

2) M IS FOR MAMA

Wow, does this one need an introduction? Written by Abbie Halberstadt, professing Bible believing Christian and mom of 10.

That said, you can believe that she has a lot of wisdom and experience to share, and does she not! With something to make you laugh, convict you, or at the very least make you re-evaluate your own motives, on every page. This book is my biggest recommendation for this year. Encouraging mothers on our journey, sharing wisdom and practical help for the everyday battles we all have. MUST READ. You can find it here.

3) SHEPHERDING A CHILD’S HEART

Written by Tedd Tripp.

What a conviction. Always emphasising how important it is to reach your child’s heart in any situation and not just try to change outward behaviour. Especially in moments of correction. To communicate that you really care for them and for their soul. You can find it here.

4) LIVING THE CROSS CENTRED LIFE

Written by C.J.Mahaney.

“Do you desire more passion for Jesus Christ? Return to the very essence of your faith – the cross of Christ. Here, the deepest truths of Calvary will stir your passion for Him into an unquenchable fire.”

I can not say it any better. This book will bring you to tears, more than once, as you walk the path that Jesus walked.

“Never lay it aside. Never move on,” says C.J.Mahaney, who shows you how to centre every day around the life-giving reality of the gospel and how to escape the pitfalls of legalism, condemnation, and feelings-driven faith. You can find it here.

5) RAISING GODLY TOMATOES

Written by Elizabeth Kruger.

Oh, how close this book is to my own heart. Elizabeth had 10 children when she was writing this book. What captured me the most was the love and joy she felt for her children. It CAN be a BLESSING and JOY to have children! What we hear mostly today is how hard it is to have and to raise children, and it is true. But hard days and seasons with children is not a reason to dislike children or to loose hope to really ENJOY our children. To cultivate and nurture a close and trusting friendship as they also become adults. A very good reminder and so much wisdom and practical advice for raising children well, unto the Lord and help them to be a joy to be around. You can find it here.

6) BECOMING A TITUS 2 WOMAN

Written by Martha Peace.

“Older women likewise are to…teach what is good, that they may encourage the younger women to love their husbands, to love their children, to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, that the word of God may not be dishonored.” Titus 2:3-5.

In today’s time, depending on where we live, it is really hard to find ‘wise older women’ to ask for help on things we struggle with and to mentor us. Luckily, with books like this, we have a ‘wise older woman’ sitting on our bookshelf! What is more important is that we must realise that we ARE the older women of tomorrow, and if we don’t make it a priority to grow in wisdom and in our own faith, we will just duplicate what we feel now, or even make the situation worse. By reading this book we can definitely grow in wisdom as ‘homemakers, wives and mothers’. You can find it here.

7) FIERCE WOMEN: THE POWER OF A SOFT WORRIOR

Written by Kimberley Wagner.

Be warned. This book will challenge you in ways you might never have been challenged before. Working with a pure Biblical perspective, Kimberley first recognises that women are made with a strong power inside all of us. For a very good and Biblical purpose. Then came the fall and we started to use our powers for evil, rather than for good. That is one of the big reasons why women all over the planet struggle with the same problems. Problems of feeling unworthy, having no purpose, being a doormat, I am ‘only’ a woman, or ‘only’ a stay at home mom. In this book Kimberley explains why we feel this way and that the root of the feeling is not wrong, but because we have this special power inside and it needs to be used for the right purpose and in the right way. I can not recommend this book enough. It will definitely encourage all woman and give us practical ways on how to use our power/fierceness for good. You can find it here.

“You may not see yourself as beautifully fierce or even slightly strong, but what if God has placed a powerful fierceness within you, within every woman? Kim admits her fierceness became a source of conflict in her marriage, but the relationship dynamic totally changed when she discovered her fierce strengths could be used to encourage and inspire her husband. She invites you to come alongside as she takes an honest look at a destructive relationship dynamic and casts a vision for the transformation God can bring to troubled marriages.”

8) PLEASING PEOPLE

Written by Lou Priolo.

People Pleaser. Is that a term you recognise? Maybe about yourself? Maybe about someone close to you? You might be surprised to find out that all of us are people pleasers, to some degree or another. Even if it is just ‘pleasing yourself’ with what you are doing or thinking. This book is truly humbling, speaking to the pride we feed inside of us, even if we don’t realise it. Lou unmasks us and guide us to repentance and show us how to be a God pleaser, rather that a people pleaser. Highly recommend to read. You can find it here.

9) THE HEART OF ANGER

Written by Lou Priolo.

Again I have to recommend a book written by the author from above. Usually The Heart Of Anger is chosen and initially being read because we see worrisome signs in our children, or in one child. As we continue reading we realise that the book speaks directly to our own hearts first. Lou also explains in the book that most of the ‘troublesome’ children’s behaviour completely changes once the parents implement the strategies he recommends in the book themselves. You can find it here.

10) GENTLE AND LOWLY

Written by Dane Ortlund.

Who is Jesus really in His heart? It is amazing to get to know Jesus so intimately, first His love and gentleness towards sinners and sufferers who deserve nothing good at all. The perfect example to us and to think we still struggle with pride. Then as a fierce warrior, undefeated in every way. Giving us no choice but to stand in awe to His mightiness and glory. You can find it here.

11) THE PILGRIM’S PROGRESS

Written by John Bunyan.

The war we experience inside as Christians and that takes place in the realm for our souls, has never been illustrated more vividly before. Seeing the journey that a christian has to follow through his life to get to the Gates of Kingdom, the temptations, the times we choose the wrong path. And through it all Jesus is with us, every step of the way. Sometimes when we are ready to give up and fall into total hopelessness because of our own choices or because we can’t see the purpose of our circumstances, He is there with love and patience, showing us the way yet again. Wonderful read. You can find it here.

12) DAMSELS IN DISTRESS

Written by Martha Peace.

We are woman. Emotional. Wacko hormones. Tired. Over stimulated. And all the valid reasons to be grumpy right now, or whatever your problem area is. Although valid in our own eyes, we do loose perspective when in the moment. Martha helps us to get perspective and see ourselves through the eyes of Scripture. She also gives practical advise in real life problems like PMS or questions on the feminist movement. You can find it here.
