WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THIS HEALTHY, SPICED MILK FOR WINTER COLDS, FLU OR SORE THROAT?
MILK OF CHOICE
We love using fresh raw milk from our own dairy cow, but I also used almond milk and it was just as delicious. The choice of milk depends on your preference.
TURMERIC

Turmeric is widely used in ‘golden milk’ and its health benefits are widely known. Here are a few reasons why I like to add turmeric to this drink:
- Curcumin, an antioxidant present in turmeric, has strong anti-inflammatory and immunity building properties.
- Organic turmeric powder contains vitamin B6, riboflavin, calcium and iron.
- Helps to keep blood sugar regulated.
- Can lower LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol.
- Turmeric has an ability to ease joint pain, stiffness and inflammation.
- In studies it also proved to stop the growth of tumor cells.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon might be known for things like cinnamon rolls, milk tart or pancakes with cinnamon sugar. It actually is a power house full of health benefits and delicious when added to teas or mixed with other spices and added to food. Some of the many benefits of cinnamon include:

- Anti-inflammatory
- Digestive aid

GINGER

Ginger is one of the plants/spices that easily get overlooked. It certainly deserves to be in the spotlight due to all its health benefits!

- Relieves sore throat
- Promotes detoxification

COCONUT OIL

Turmeric is a fat-soluble herb, thus adding some kind of fat like coconut oil or organic grass-fed butter, helps with the absorption of as much of the turmeric as possible. Bonus if it is extra virgin coconut oil that also has its own health benefits.

FRESHLY GROUND BLACK PEPPER

Black pepper contains a component called piperine with the most crucial property of enhancing the absorption of curcumin in the body, thus it is perfect to add to this healthy spiced milk. It can also help in relieving headaches, digestive issues and nausea.
RAW HONEY

The health benefits of honey is endless. Just a few are:
- Contains vitamins, nutrients and enzymes
- Anti-viral
- Anti-fungal
- Helps against allergies
- Fights infections
- Healing properties
- Strengthens immune system

Variations On Healthy, Spiced Milk For Winter Colds, Flu Or A Sore Throat
The amounts in this recipe are completely adjustable to your taste. You can make it stronger, with extra burn when adding more ginger or cayenne. Or if that is not your thing you can put a smaller quantity of the spices until it it hits your spot!
The honey in the recipe is also only if preferred. I do realise that some people are allergic to honey or choose not to use it for other health reasons. Feel free to omit it if you prefer.
What if you don’t have fresh ginger or cinnamon sticks?
Also, not a problem. I do prefer the taste of fresh ginger and cinnamon sticks. You can also use fresh turmeric root in stead of powder. But if all you have is the powdered form, don’t shy away! An inch of fresh ginger is about the equivalent of 2ml of powdered ginger. Two cinnamon sticks can be replaced with about 5ml powdered cinnamon. Two inches of turmeric root can be used to replace 15ml of turmeric powder.
HOW TO MAKE THIS HEALTHY, SPICED MILK FOR COLDS, FLU AND A SORE THROAT


- Begin by preparing all fresh ingredients.
- Wash and slice ginger (and turmeric, if you prefer the root).
- Pour milk into a pot on the stove.
- Add turmeric, cinnamon sticks, sliced ginger and cayenne to the milk.
- Bring to a boil and simmer for 5 tot 10 minutes while stirring; never leave it, it will boil over in a second!
- Turn off the stove and add the coconut oil.
- Pour carefully into a coffee percolator (my pro tip), and slowly strain.
- Pour into a special cup and stir in the honey.
- Add the freshly ground black pepper on top.

If you want to make it extra special:

- Beat some cream until soft peaks and scoop on top of your hot healthy, soothing, spiced milk.
- Add a dash of powdered cinnamon for garnish and you have a drink to put any restaurant to shame!

Healthy Spiced Milk For Cold And Flu Season

- 2 Cinnamon Sticks (5ml powder)
- 15ml Turmeric
- About 4cmx4cm Fresh Ginger (2ml powder)
- Tip of teaspoon of Cayenne Pepper
- Pinch of freshly ground black pepper
- 1 large teaspoon (or to taste) fresh raw honey (optional)
Instructions
- Begin by preparing all fresh ingredients.
- Wash and cut ginger.
- Pour milk to a pot on the stove.
- Add turmeric, cinnamon sticks, ginger and cayenne to the milk.
